What? Boys Don't Like to Read? By Mrs. Green
Well, I have
something exciting for all you boys that do not like to read. Don’t stop reading just yet. Check out this website and blog:
These sites
have some great book reviews. They also
talk about different authors that write with boys’ interests in mind. I think you will find some books on which you might
get hooked.
And speaking
of authors that write with boys in mind, have you read any of Carl Deuker’s
books? Mr. Deuker grew up in California
and loved being out in the woods and hiking around his neighborhood. He loved sports, too, but found that he was
really a “Classic Second Stringer." He
was too short for basketball, too slow for football, and not a great player for
any sport. But that was okay; he just
enjoyed being on the second string and playing with his friends.
Mr. Deuker
is a teacher and has written several books about different sports. We have lots of his books here in the Maus
library, and I encourage you to check them out next year. You might just find that you really do like
reading after all.

Author, Gary Soto by Mrs. Green
“You
can always spot bright people. They are
reading a book.” Gary Soto
Gary
Soto has written over 20 poetry books and over 30 fiction books for young
readers. We are fortunate to have 10 of
his books here in our library. Mr. Soto
grew up in one of the many barrios (poor Mexican American neighborhoods) in
Fresno, California in the mid 1970’s.
Soto's books focus on the daily trials and tribulations of Spanish-speaking
Americans. Most of his books are written
from his life experiences in the barrios, but he says he really writes about
feelings and experiences of most American kids.
He is considered one of the most contemporary authors in the United
States.
One of my favorite books that he writes is the short story collection Help Wanted. It is a book of 10 different stories. It’s a fast and very entertaining read.
